DELE Preparation
Certification in the Spanish language is a valuable and necessary credential for many people seeking to either work or study in Spanish speaking countries, or for those interested in conducting global business.
The DELE is a well respected option available to those who are seeking an internationally recognized certification.
When seeking language certification, please take the time to consider whether the FIDESCU D.I.E. might be a better solution given your time constraints.
What is the DELE?
The DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera) is possibly the most widely recognized examination and certification of Spanish as a foreign language in the world. It is administered by the Instituto Cervantes, and like the FIDESCU D.I.E. it is officially recognized by the government of Spain. The exam is set and corrected by Salamanca University.
It offers young people and adults the possibility of obtaining qualifications which vouch for their level of linguistic ability in Spanish: oral, written, or both. This qualification is divided as followed:
- The first level is the basic level (Nivel Inicial) which is for students with a elementary knowledge of Spanish. This level is for students who have studied Spanish language for a short period, with a basic understanding of the Spanish grammar and who understand and communicate in situations that requires minimal Spanish language skills.
- The second Spanish language course level is the intermediate (Nivel Intermedio) which is for students who are able to understand and speak the Spanish language in every day situations and who have a good knowledge of the Spanish grammar.
- The third level is the advanced (Nivel Superior) and is for students who have studied Spanish for a longer period and have a full understanding of the language and the Spanish culture and who are able to communicate in an advanced level in all situations.
At every level, the exam consists of the following 5 parts:
- Part 1: A reading comprehension section containing a variable-length Spanish text followed by a number of multiple choice questions about the text.
- Part 2: A written skills section consisting of a prompt to write a short text or an essay (depending on the level being tested).
- Part 3: A listening comprehension section where a Spanish text is read aloud and is followed by a number of related questions.
- Part 4: A grammar and vocabulary section consisting of multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions.
- Part 5: An oral section where the student has to talk to a Spanish examiner for about 10-15 minutes about a picture or a specific topic.
When can I take the DELE?
The DELE Spanish language exam is arranged twice a year (in May and in November) and in some places also in August. The DELE Spanish language test can be taken in nearly all major Spanish Universities and can also be taken some places abroad (for instance it is available through at least one university in South Florida).
To register for the exam you will have to fill in a registration form (which can be obtained at the universities who arrange the exams), pay the fee for taking the exam (which in Spain is approx. 95€ for the basic level, 115€ for the intermediate level and 135€ for the advanced level) and provide documentation that you are not a citizens in a Spanish speaking country (photocopy + original ID).
The above documentation has to be handed to the school where you would like to take the exam about one to two months before the exam. The school will then provide you with documentation as proof of your participation, which you have to bring to the exam. The exact time and date for the DELE Spanish language exam will be send to you by mail.
The DELE Preparation Course
This course begins with your language skills assessment, and ends when you are ready to take the DELE exam at your desired level.
The results of your skills assessment will place you into the appropriate written and oral level as defined by the DELE exam. We will then advise you, based on your desired certification level and your time-frame, on the class schedule that is expected to deliver the desired result.
As you continue to progress, your teacher will provide you with feedback regarding whether the frequency of classes should be increased or descreased.
You should know that the DELE deemphasizes oral communication skills, and as such, the focus on improving the students' conversation skills is therefore not a priority in DELE preparation courses - apart from practising descriptions of photos.
